What is BALM?

  • LinkedIn

Bay Area Lipidomics Meeting (BALM) is a collaborative platform that gathers researchers from academia and industry in the Bay Area, a region of California that surrounds and includes the San Francisco Bay. The meeting will primarily focus on the comprehensive analysis of lipids in biological systems. Through advanced analytical techniques like mass spectrometry, BALM aims to bring research to the forefront that focuses on the identification, quantification, and characterization of the diverse array of lipids present in biology. The meeting serves as a forum for discussing innovative strategies in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics, interpretation of lipidomics data, and the application of lipidomics to elucidate biological processes, as well as clinical and translational aspects. It aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and advance scientific innovation in the rapidly evolving field of lipidomics. Join us for the 1st meeting of BALM on Friday, August 9, 2024!

Lipidomics is a rapidly evolving field focusing specifically on the comprehensive analysis of lipids in biological systems and employs advanced analytical techniques. To unravel the complexities of lipid-related processes, we must bring together researchers from various disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. By developing robust, fast, and comprehensive tools for lipid analysis, we empower the broader lipid biology community to analyze lipids quickly in various sample types. This collaborative approach is indispensable in unlocking the full scope of insights into lipid biology, pushing the boundaries of knowledge, and advancing scientific innovation.

The Bay Area is a hub for technological innovation in many areas, and we believe that a central meeting of lipidomics researchers will aid in establishing this novel technology to reach its full potential. We believe that a comprehensive understanding of the roles that lipids play in biology necessitates a collaborative effort. We aim to bring together researchers from UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Stanford, and biotech industry partners to build a strong community and establish a setting to present and discuss advancements, limitations and applications of current lipidomics analyses. We want to showcase advances in analytical workflows and use cases on how to navigate and interpret the multi-dimensional data generated through lipidomics workflows.

Topics discussed at this meeting include:

·         Innovative Strategies for Mass Spectrometry based Lipidomics

·         Interpretation of Lipidomics Data

·         Lipidomics to Elucidate Biological Processes

·         Clinical and Translational Lipidomics

Invited Speakers

Proud to bring renowned researchers and industry leaders in lipidomics from around the Bay Area.
